Directing Philosophy

“As a director, I try to make the rehearsal space safe for all involved, using consent-based collaboration. Whether it is an actor, choreographer, intimacy director, crew member, or merely someone watching, everyone is welcome to collaborate and create art they can be proud of. Consent and communication comes first and foremost in every situation, making sure that everyone in the space is able to do their best work. When actors know that the space they are in is safe, they are free to make choices that enrich the process and outcome.”

  • "Caroline Pillow has been one of the most creative, inspiring directors that I’ve had the pleasure of working with. She truly values her work in a way that motivates her production team. There is this beautiful passion within her that I see so much strength in. The most important comment I can make about Caroline Pillow as a director is that she has so much respect for the people she works with. She values their opinions and contributions to the work, as much as she values her own, if not more. She sees their artistry and knows that accepting and integrating their work with her own can only benefit her."

Joy Stachmus, Intimacy, Lift, and Fight Captain (Peter and the Starcatcher)

  • “If I had to condense my experience with Caroline down to a few words: I laughed, I cried, I dug for answers, we created, we rediscovered, we played, we breathed life into an otherwise lifeless piece of paper. I say ‘we’ because it was truly a collaboration almost every step of the way. With this collaboration, Caroline, the cast, and I were all able to build this story into a tangible world of pirates and fairies. Caroline was a teacher who asked questions that made you think, discover, and rediscover. She was a guide on your path that allowed you to roam and play, but always lead you back home. She was creative in that she sparked a creativity in me that made the story and its characters feel oh so real. And it’s because of this gorgeous creation, I wept at its end. Caroline is a breath of fresh air and a wonderful human being and, as a director, that fact rings true all the same. I was challenged by her in a way that sparked a new level of creativity for this show and that alone was artistically fulfilling. So, my experience with Caroline, in short, was artistically fulfilling, creatively liberating, and pure fun.”

Malori Martin, actor (Peter and the Starcatcher)
